Bedroom Shuffle-Room #2

Daughter #2's bedroom is complete and so we turn our attentions to the room that initiated all the madness. This had, at one time, been such a pretty little room...

...but alas those days were gone and something needed to be done. First things first, we ripped out that rug! I cannot even show you what it looked like-my daughter would be mortified. Just suffice to say that it needed to go.

Once the carpet was out we ripped out the closet. The closet was an odd space with a closet within a closet. Gotta love old houses. My plan is to custom build something that will be open-leaving no room to cram stuff into. Everything will have a place!

Now, we work. First Mister patched all the holes in the walls and fixed some outlet issues. Then we turned our focus to the floor.....eww.

We have decided not to put a carpet back in the room. The bedrooms have hardwood floors but it's not what you think. The house is very old and when it was originally built it was built with the understanding that nice materials were used where they would be seen-downstairs in the living areas. In mid 1800's bedrooms were for sleeping so the floors got wood that had not been finished. They were hand sawn, funky sizes, some with cupping that had to be sanded down, ect. Also, there was the issue of a chimney stack that used to go right up through the floor. It had been patched over but not well.

Since we have decided not to re-carpet the room we (Mister) filled the spaces between boards, replaced the bad patch job with new lumber, secured loose boards and prepared the floor for painting.

When we finished daughter #2's room I stood back and just sighed as I looked at the quiet, peace inducing room in it's pretty shades of grey and white. On completely the opposite end of the spectrum is daughter #3. Mister let her choose her colors with little imput from mom. Yikes!

She chose Modest Silver by Valspar for three of the walls and ceiling. Okay, not bad....

The third wall and the interior of the closet were painted Pink Burst by Valspar. This photo doesn't do it justice. There is a twinge of yellow in it that gives it an ever-so-slightly,  flamingo-peachy-orange-pink kinda hue.

The first coat of the pink was hideous! All the light pink and primer was showing through and it looked like a neon Pepto Bismol! Mister and daughter were trippin'! "You let her choose the color", I was quick to remind him. Then, I assured them both that it was only the first coat and that it would darken up with the second coat.

In addition to that when all the furniture, ect gets into the room the color will just be in the background. Press on.

The closet area was next. We were dealing with a small space so we need to make use of it wisely. I took pencil and my graph paper in hand and started drawing. This is what I came up with.

Because the wall slopes off we needed to custom build the shelves. I already had a hanging shoe rack so I decided to use that instead of having Mister build that too. That required that we swap the orientation of  the open shelves and shoes.

The floors got two coats of Bleached Shadow by Valspar. It is the darkest shade of grey on the same swatch of her wall color. The trim and door was painted in the December Starlight also by Valspar.

My girls love accessories and so it is no surprise that Charming Charlies is one of their favorite stores. With that in mind I decided to do something that could display and neatly store some of those accessories. I decided a peg board was needed but I wanted it to be big. I had a frame piece in the basement. It was part of a dry-bar that we reworked into our kitchen island.

Kitchen Island?

Mister said "throw that away"....silly man! Now it is the frame for my girls pegboard. I screwed two blocks of wood on the back so that it stands out from the wall-necessary for pegboards.

Now, the room is ready for the pretty.....

Oh...I can't stand it! Here's a peek at the finished closet.

Craigslist finds, Ikea shopping, making due with what we had and Face Book Yard Sale sites are all part of a room on a budget. Come see the finished project next week!

And, Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Bedroom Shuffle-Part 4, Bedroom Reveal

We have completed the first bedroom in our bedroom shuffle. It all started with a post I did on vanity makeovers. After seeing a picture of my youngest's (daughter #3) bedroom Mister and I both felt the need to address some things in that room. It no longer looked as cute, pretty or clean as it did in that blog post. In order to do work in that room we needed to a place to put her and her stuff temporarily. That led to daughter #2 wanting to switch rooms......ugh. What started out as a simple (ha!) project has turned into some work!

I am so glad to finally be done with the first bedroom. This is the room for daughter #2. She selected the color on the wall- Into the Gloaming by Sherwin Williams at Lowes. It is an HGTV color. It is a beautiful, calm color. The trim is December Starlight by Valspar. It is warm white that still reads white and not beige. She had a vision for her room and we did our best to accommodate on a budget.

We ran into a little extra work in the closet. (You can read about it here.)

Her headboard was found on Craigslist. (You can read about it here.)

.There are two windows in the room. Only one of them is a privacy issue which we addressed with a simple roller shade from Home Depot. She wanted shutters for the window, not for functional purposes but totally aesthetic. I found them at a vintage fair and cleaned them up. (You can read about it here.) I found out later that Mister had suggested this idea to her.

The bookcase was there from before. The size of the bedroom meant there was no room for a dresser so we used the bookcase. I purchased six Circo storage boxes from Target. We used them for clothing that needed drawers like socks, ect. on the two bottom shelves. Her closet is the largest in the house so she hung everything she possible could and used the shelf for sweaters.

Every girl needs a place to put on her makeup and fix her hair. For this we utilized the little area next to the closet. It has a small window that overlooks the kitchen addition and further out into the back yard. The area is about 2 feet wide. Mister used laminated mdf and cut a hole to feed cords through to the outlet below. We found the stool, that opens for storage, on clearance at Target.

The chandelier was from another room in our house that got a makeover last year so it didn't cost us a dime! Yay! The carpet was in good condition as this room used to be our office and just didn't take a lot of abuse. The color would not be first choice for this pretty little room but it will do. She had the bed spread for her queen bed. Here it goes to the floor on her new twin bed so there was no need for a bed skirt. I did buy new sheets in grey.

The radiator cannot be moved. A marble shelf that Mister had picked up from the garbage a year ago finally found a purpose. And, the tissue puff in the window was from a friends party-it was going to be thrown out but we hate to see pretty things tossed. I works fine in place of a valance here.

When everything was said and done we spent less than $250 not including the price of a twin mattress and box spring. That makes Mister very happy. I got to reuse items we had in the house and I got to rework used pieces in the new space. That makes me happy. My girl's ideas were made a reality and it resulted in a beautiful bedroom and she is happy.

Okay, I'll take a few more minutes to enjoy this room then off to the next one....

Thanks for spending time with me!

Shutter Search - Bedroom Shuffle Part 3

In the repurposing of our office into a bedroom for one of our teen daughters I have had to let go of some of the design control. As hard as that is for me I have to say that I am on board with what my girl is wanting for her room. She has definitely caught my vintage bug. She likes second hand stores, thrift shops, and reworking old things.

Her idea about the headboard was good and the only place it can sit in the room is against the window. That leaves curtains out, completely. She had a plan....shutters. She wanted a pair of old shutters! How proud can a mama be?!

With that in mind I set out with tape measure in hand. I found the perfect pair at the Vintage Bazaar. (I told you about it here.) The seller worked with me on the price and I got them both at a great deal; far less than I would have paid for curtains. I loved the green color but that was not going to work in my girl's room. She has chosen a soft shade of grey. (Can anyone tell me the right way to spell grey/gray?)

After cleaning the grime and dirt off them I...........................wait for it...........................painted them! Roll your eyes, go ahead.

I first gave them a coat of gray that we used on the wall. I mixed up the p-o-p paint (recipe in this post) and went to work.

I let that dry then hit the shutters with the same white I mixed up for the headboard. I put two coats of that on.

When it had completely dried I used a sanding block to scuff up the paint, revealing some grey and sometimes taking it down to the wood. I promptly, mounted them to either side of the window behind her bed.

Nope, not gonna show you yet! You will have to wait to see the finished product.

2015 Fall Fairs and Markets-Part 2

It seems a bit off to be writing about fall fairs and markets when the temperatures are in the 70's. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining. Vivid memories of last winter flood my consciousness. It was a shock as it came on the heels of some unseasonably warm weather. We had stolen many sunny days from winter's allotted block of time and when the penalty was exacted it was harsh. We had record breaking amounts of snow in a matter of 6 weeks-more than 110 inches in Boston; over 9 feet! I think we had a little more than that where I live but after the first 8 feet who cares!?

Anyway, I did want to recap for you two local markets I got to attend. I love showing you pictures of the things that catch my eye. You just never know what may spark some inspiration to dig something out of the attic and use it in a different way or to grab a handful of old castoffs or garden things and bring them indoors for a cute vignette. So, off we go!

Yes, a wreath just like this did end up in my living room! (Here)
The first was to Mary Ellen and Sandy's Market. It is a pop-up market that happens a couple times a year. They did not disappoint with their lovely collection of vendors and the beautiful displays enticing the buyer and decorator (wannabe decorator) alike.

A few weeks later, on a crisp October morning,  I had the pleasure of attending the first Marketplace at Adam's Farm hosted by the ladies from Vintage Thymes Monthly Market. I have missed their monthly markets as they search for a new, more permanent home. I had been waiting patiently (or not so) for this market. Of course, I brought my camera!

My mister is always a sport and will accompany me when I ask but I got to go to this one with my dear friend. She is a busy, busy lady and in a season of her life that means any time spent with her is a precious commodity.

Not practical but terribly cute!
We took in breakfast first; always a good start to any outing. Conversation, prayer and just being able to share with one another about the things going on in our lives brings so much enjoyment to my soul. We are told to share one another's burdens and after spending time together and talking I was left with a better understanding of how to pray for her.

We walked and talked and reminisced over objects found..."I remember these..." or "My grandmother used to have one of those" peppered our conversation. We each picked up a few things here and there. Christmas seemed to permeate the autumnal setting. As much as I do not like to rush the holidays along I did find myself humming Christmas hymns.

I really did try to get my friend on the Selfie Scooter but she was not having any of that!

There were lovely vignettes that made me want to go home and rearrange things, again. (Some of that wore off before I got home.)

Doesn't this remind you of Fixer Upper?!

Vintage Haven
All the booths just made me appreciate the talent and ingenuity of the vendors represented at this market. "Why didn't I think of that", seems to be a common phrase that runs through my brain.

A tub and a wagon!

The Crate Cottage

Arrows are everywhere in home decor right now.

Gorgeous, right?! Reminded me of something that belongs with Anita at Cedar Hill Farmhouse.
We had reached the end of the market and I was feeling like the time had gone way too fast. At the end of it all we saw this sweet little box behind some other items not really displayed well.

I thought it was odd to not be out where it could be seen and appreciated rather than tucked sheepishly away from those who would appreciate it.

And then, once again, the Lord graciously opened my eyes. My thankfulness for this time with my friend should not be something peeking out from the shadows; hiding behind the selfishness of me wanting more time. Thankfulness should have been pouring out of every fiber of my being but like a child with a piece of candy I was looking at the bag it came out of and wanted more neglecting to savor the what I already had. As a Christian I am called to be thankful and grateful without ceasing or ending...in ALL things.

Col 3:15  And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

Psa 7:17  I will give to the LORD the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the LORD, the Most High.

Psa 86:12  I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.

Col_3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

I am thankful...thankful that God corrects my wrong thinking. I am thankful for the family He has given me in Christ. I am thankful for a dear friend to miss when she can't be near. I am thankful for autumns, apples, and markets and crisp mornings, cocoa and frost and for you. Thank you for spending time with me today.....while I linger.
